The Friends help enhance lives

For each event that the Friends hold, they adopt one ward or department and aim to raise enough money to buy a specific piece of equipment that will make a real difference to life enhancing treatments and the quality of care that patients receive.

Some examples of these are listed below:

Ambulance

One of the first major items purchased by the Friends was a replacement ambulance (pictured right) for the Organ Transplant Unit, which performs more than 180 transplants annually.

Sensory equipment

Funds have bought therapy and sensory equipment for children attending the Child Development Centre.

Image Review Suite

The Friends helped to upgrade a small Image Review Suite in Oncology to improve delivery and accuracy of radiotherapy. Karen Selby, Image Review Radiographer said:

“The new equipment has increased the definition of the images thus making them easier to see and to work with. It has also allowed us to expand our training programme across radiographer and medical personnel. As a department we would like to extend our grateful thanks to the Friends for their interest and support, which has resulted in increased productivity and enabled us to move towards achieving our goals as regards our imaging strategy.”

Interventional Bronchoscopy Service

The Friends funded the establishment of the Interventional Broncholscopy Service at Addenbrooke's, which means that patients do not have to be transferred to other hospitals, but can be given appropriate therapeutic treatment for the management of central airway obstruction at Addenbrooke's. This has improved quality of care and promoted patient satisfaction within a modern and flexible NHS service.
