Charlie wins Atlantic Rowing race!
1 March 2010
Intrepid fundraiser, Charlie PItcher, has won the Woodvale Atlantic Rowing Race 2009, which he was rowing in aid of the Renal Unit!
First-time rower Charlie won not only his solo class, but the whole race in 52 days, 6 hours and 47 minutes – a new British solo record and the first time a solo boat has ever won the Woodvale Atlantic Rowing Race.
Battling through difficult weather, rough seas and calm spells, Charlie rowed for 16 hours a day. He took an early lead and won the race over 300 nautical miles ahead of the rest of the fleet.
Charlie's Atlantic Row success comes nearly a year after completing the 24th Marathon des Sables in Morocco in April 2009. He is the first man to run the Marathon des Sables and race solo across the Atlantic in one year.
So far Charlie has raised over £31,000 for the Addenbrooke's Renal Unit in memory of his friend Shaun McLeod Jones who was a kidney dialysis patient at the Unit for 13 years until he sadly died in May 2003.
Charlie is now dreaming up his next challenge to raise even more money for the Renal Unit.
