Barn dance raises nearly £1000 for breast unit

25 October 2008

Helen Donohoe and family held a barn dance in their home village of Hinxworth on 25 October to raise £981.94 for the Cambridge Breast Unit at Addenbrooke's where Helen has been treated for breast cancer. Helen said: "I was so pleased with the turn out for the barn dance and the evening went better than I could have hoped. Thank you to all those who supported and danced their way through the evening." The evening was made very special with thanks to the Ivel Valley band, dance coordinator Joan Rutt and many volunteers for decorating the village hall, cooking the food and helping the evening go smoothly.

Golf day for Oncology ward

18 September 2008

Bradnam Joinery, Funeral Directors Suppliers based in Haverhill, held a charity golf day in September, raising £12,000. The event was organised by Bob and Jo from the company in memory of their colleague Vic Dashwoood who was treated for cancer at Addenbrooke's. Local companies, friends and families attended and all had a very enjoyable day. All money raised went to Ward D9 to purchase a new 12 lead ECG machine and a new Dinamap.

Adam Rogers Trust Football Competition

4/5 September 2008

The Adam Rogers Trust (ART) raised £100,000 in September by holding a 24-hour five-a-side football competition at the David Beckham Academy in London. The competition involved 48 teams comprised of staff from UBS investment bank and their clients, and also a team of staff from Addenbrooke’s Hospital. The teams played in London until 12 midnight GMT, when the games began with UBS teams in Singapore. At 3am GMT play recommenced in London. The day contributed towards a total of £800,000 raised by ART to fund a paediatric cancer care support team – The Adam Rogers Care Team – at Addenbrooke's. The event was sponsored by UBS investment bank.

Charity ball to say thanks for care

30 August 2008

Clare Dearling raised £8433 for Wards C2, C3, PDU, and the Maxillofacial Department to say thank you for the care her daughter, Eloise, received when she was treated at Addenbrooke's for a large tumour in her cheek. Clare raised the money by holding a ball in a marquee at her home, which included a charity auction. Clare said: "Thanks to the fantastic staff at Addenbrooke's Eloise is now fine and the tumour was successfully removed after a very long operation. The skill and professionalism we have received has been outstanding and we wanted to give something back by organising the charity ball."

Spanish golf club raises funds for kidney transplant ward

August 2008

The Vega Baja Premier Golf League in Alicante, Spain, raised £760 from a raffle held at their Inter Society Golf Day dinner, in aid of the Transplant Unit, Ward C9, at Addenbrooke's. The Golf League's secretary, Ivie Davies, has an affiliation with the ward because his wife, Diana, donated a kidney to their son Lawrence at Addenbrooke's in July 2007.

Ivie Davies said: "The League teams felt this was a just and worthy cause, and an appropriate way to say thank you to the staff of Ward C9 at Addenbrooke's Hospital, and will hopefully assist in creating more awareness for live donors."

Links Golf Club fundraising

August 2008

Jacquie Casburn (pictured second left), ladies captain of the Links Golf Club in Newmarket during 2007/08, chose the Oncology centre as her charity for the year to say thank you for the treatment that her mother received there. Jacquie raised £7000 by holding charity golf matches and a dinner with an auction, with the help from the Camelot foundation.

Jack Burgin's cycle ride

18-30 July 2008

Jack Burgin cycled from Lands End to John O'Groats in July to raise £2233.41 for head and neck cancer care at Addenbrooke's. Jack said: "All the money that I have raised will go to head and neck cancer care at Addenbrooke's where my boss and family friend was treated."

Anna Skinner's skydive

June 2008

Anna Skinner, a nurse in the Eye Unit theatre, has braved the elements and undertaken a tandem skydive in memory of her son Christopher who sadly died from a brain haemorrhage at the age of 24 last year.

Anna's skydive raised around £2000 towards a much-needed state-of-the-art portable CT scanner for the Neurosciences Department where Christopher was treated.

Anna said: "I wanted to do something amazing in his memory, something he would never believe I would do, yet he would be so proud of his mum when I did it. This is why I braved the tandem skydive! When I read about the fundraising for the portable CT scanner I knew this was the way for me to say thank you to all the staff who tried to save Christopher. With this state of the art equipment, when time is of the essence, more lives can be saved by this dedicated team."

 

Pink Rose Dinner cycle ride

Charles Wilson, Consultant Oncologist, Elena Provenzano, Consultant Histopathologist, Ruchi Sinnatamby, Consultant Radiologist, completed the challenging London to Paris cycle ride in June with Robert Saunders, a relative of a former breast cancer patient. The team trained hard for their trip of nearly 300 miles and raised £10,000 for the new Breast Cancer Research Unit at Addenbrooke’s.

Janet Pickett's Mount Everest Climb

31 May 2008

Janet Pickett, Consultant Anaesthetist, has raised over £5,000 in aid of maternity services at the Rosie Hospital and Children's Services at Addenbrooke's Hospital, by successfully climbing to the summit of Mount Everest.

Wallace and Gromit visited Addenbrooke's children's wards in May to hand over £7,000 from the Wallace and Gromit's Children's Foundation. image depicting blank gifThe Wallace and Gromit's Children's Foundation works to support children's hospitals and hospices nationwide. For the past few years the Foundation has provided grants to Addenbrooke's to help fund a music therapist to work with children with complex and chronic conditions.

Adam Rogers Trust Cycle Ride

11 May 2008

In May two hundred people helped fundraise for Children's Services at Addenbrooke's by taking part in a London to Cambridge cycle ride organised by the Adam Rogers Trust (ART). The day contributed to raising £600,000 towards a total of £800,000 pledged to fund a paediatric cancer care support team – the ART Cancer Care Team – at Addenbrooke's. The event was sponsored by UBS investment bank.

Ashwell's charity golf day

Addenbrooke's supporters, Ashwell property developers, held a corporate golf day for Children's Services. The event, held at Gog Magog Golf Club, was extremely successful raising over £26,000 for the department.

Marathon Man

1 May 2008

Jeremy Dale was one of ACT's London Marathon runners this year, raising an amazing £16,000! Jeremy was running to raise money for the paediatric oncology ward - Ward C2 - where his son, Daniel, has been treated. On 1st May, Jeremy and Daniel presented their cheque to James Nicholson, Consultant Paediatric Oncologist.

Rocking the Kasbah for Ward D2

26 April 2008

The eleventh Newmarket Guineas Ball was held in April, and one of its chosen charities was Addenbrooke's Charitable Trust – raising money for creating a sensory room on children's ward D2. The ball had an 'Arabian Nights' theme and included an auction, belly dancers and a bucking camel! Four hundred and seventy guests attended the event including celebrities from the racing world such as Frankie Dettori and Derek Thompson. The event raised £30,000 to be split between its chosen charities.

Breakthrough Breast Cancer's Crocus Walk

31 March 2008

Breakthrough Breast Cancer's North Herts & South Cambs Support Group held its annual Crocus Walk in aid of local breast cancer charities. Over 100 people took part in the event held on Saturday 1 March in and around Meldreth, South Cambridgeshire.

Val Whyborn, Hayley MacKenzie and Barbara Urquhart from the support group presented the Cambridge Breast Unit with a cheque for£350 raised from a raffle and 10% of the entry fee.

Steed Doe - Sudbury to Sea in a Bath

25 March 2008

On 3 March 2008, Mr Steed Doe presented Vicky Fairchild of ACT with a cheque for £4,165 for the Children's Oncology ward at Addenbrooke's.

Mr Doe and friend paddled in a bath from Sudbury in Suffolk to the sea to raise the money in memory of a friend's son, Richard Townrow, who was a patient on the Children's Oncology ward.

Jane Ingham and Great Chesterford Primary School Fundraiser

13 March 2008

Jane Ingham, a breast cancer patient at the Cambridge Breast Unit, and all the staff and pupils at Great Chesterford Primary School where Jane works, said thank you for Jane’s care by holding a collection after their school play and organising a book and cake stall to raise money for the Cambridge Breast Unit.

Jane visited the Unit to hand over a cheque for a fabulous £2,000 to Rita Stewart, Lesley Rowlands and Val Hopkins, staff at the Unit.

Jo Scrimshaw's Pink Rose Dinner

11 March 2008

Jo Scrimshaw held a Pink Rose Dinner at her home for friends and family. Guests to Pink Rose Dinners are asked to make a donation towards the Cambridge Breast Unit (CBU).

The event raised £1108.50 towards a state-of-the-art ultrasound machine for the CBU's Breast Cancer Research Unit.

Keith Griffith's Golfing Challenge

25 February 2008

Mr Keith Griffiths from Spalding, Lincolnshire, raised £550 for the NCCU through a golfing challenge.

Mr Griffiths was a patient in NCCU in 2006 and wanted to say thank you to Addenbrooke's for saving his life.

In his captaincy at Tydd Golf and Country Club in Cambridgeshire, Mr Griffiths set a challenge for players – anyone whose ball went into the lake had to give a donation to NCCU.

Greg and Louise Knight's Wedding

Greg and Louise asked their wedding guests to make a donation to Paediatric Oncology instead of buying presents, to say thank you for the care that Greg's daughter, Victoria, received there. They raised an amazing £16,525!

Cathy Challis' Party

Cathy Challis, former patient of the Cambridge Breast Unit held a party with a raffle raising an amazing £850 for the Unit.
