Transforming care for blood cancer patients

Transforming care for blood cancer patients

Thursday, April 6, 2017

This year our ACT on Cancer Campaign is focusing on supporting a major redevelopment programme for the haematology oncology department.

The haematology day unit cares for people undergoing investigations and treatment of disorders affecting the blood or bone marrow, in an outpatients setting. The unit will be moving from Ward E10, to the recently vacated on-site dialysis unit, which will enable patients with blood-related cancers to be treated more quickly, with an improved quality of care.

We need to raise £350,000 in addition to the NHS core provision, to make this new unit amazing; providing additional state-of-the-art equipment, a dedicated cancer counselling service and the most comfortable environment, and we’re asking our generous supporters to help blood cancer patients like Dean Morley (pictured).

With your support we can make the new haematology day unit somewhere extra special. We would like patients to benefit from not only the latest equipment, but a calming environment too, using art and decorative window frosting, bringing home comforts to an otherwise sterile space.

Patients will also be able to use a new quiet room to pause for reflection or have private conversations with staff. We’d like to raise enough money for a high-quality sofa, chairs and accessories.

Outside, the tired benches and planters will be replaced with something more colourful and creative – turning a drab, unwelcoming space into respite from the busy hospital environment.

"As matron on E10 at Addenbrooke’s, I have an understanding of how tough treatment for blood cancer is. Chemotherapy, transfusions and other treatments can be emotionally draining and physically exhausting. Often, patients are here for hours at a time. On top of that, our facilities are bursting at the seams. Unfortunately, this is all putting enormous pressure on

our patients at a time when they are facing great anxiety, as well as the staff who want to offer them the very best care. We can’t allow this to continue."

Will YOU help us provide this much-needed space and state-of-the-art equipment?
